I'm not a big fan of BBC, but I find this news coverage both impressive and hilarious. Impressive for the neutrality and hilarious... well, read the last sentence...

Nestle in Azerbaijan CD blunder

The Swiss-based multinational food company, Nestle, has apologised to Azerbaijan after a gift attached to a breakfast cereal backfired.

The CD-ROM featured information about countries around the world but the data on Azerbaijan caused outrage there.

It said that Azerbaijan had started a war against neighbouring Armenia and that the hotly disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh belonged to Armenia.

Nestle has withdrawn the cereal and promised to seize the offending CDs.

Tense and volatile

Conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the early 1990s over Nagorno-Karabakh killed an estimated 30,000 people.

Hundreds of thousands of refugees were created on both sides.

And despite a peace deal in 1994, the situation remains tense and volatile.

Nestle inadvertently stumbled into a minefield.

The Azeri government vowed to take action, and there has been widespread talk of a public boycott.

Nestle has now issued a formal apology but some Azeris are still not happy.

They accuse Nestle of playing Armenia's hand, and are demanding more than just an apology to chew on.

Death toll in Armenia's postelection violence rises to 10

YEREVAN, Armenia: An Armenian Health Ministry official says the death toll in the nation's postelection violence in March has reached 10.

The official said Monday that 27-year-old Samvel Arutunyan died Friday. He had been in intensive care with head injuries sustained during clashes between police and demonstrators in the Armenian capital on March 1.

The demonstrators were protesting alleged fraud in the Feb. 19 presidential election.

After Round 8 Levon Aronian continues to lead in the overall standings of the Amber Blindfold and Rapid Tournament. In a direct encounter the Armenian grandmaster beat runner-up Vishy Anand 1,5-0,5. Magnus Carlsen moved into second place thanks to a 2-0 rout of Shakhriyar Mamedyarov.

The battle between leader Levon Aronian and runner-up Vishy Anand started with a spectacular clash in the blindfold game. Aronian admitted that he wouldn’t play this riskily in a classical game, but because this is Amber and the players want to entertain the spectators he tried to play sharply. The root of Black’s problems was 14…f6 (a horrible move, in Aronian’s words) that left a big hole on e6 that White effectively aimed his play at. Still, the Armenian’s exploitation of his advantage was certainly not flawless. He condemned his 28.Rh4 (he should have played 28.Qc2) to which Black could have replied 28…Kd7! 29.Re2 f5 and it isn’t even clear if White is better anymore. However, after Anand missed this chance, Aronian won the g4 pawn and reached an easily winning ending in which he was an exchange up. Which proved to be enough for the win.
The rapid game was a relatively short affair. Aronian chose the Marshall Attack against Anand’s Ruy Lopez and made a rather easy draw. After the game he reassured the fans of the Marshall: ‘This is about the best variation there is against the Marshall. White has everything, an extra pawn and he can try for more. However, from another perspective it is hard to see how he can make progress and really play for a win.’ After 29 moves Anand subscribed to this vision and offered a draw.

In Round 7 of the Amber Blindfold and Rapid Tournament Levon Aronian increased his lead thanks to a 1,5-0,5 win over Veselin Topalov. In the overall standings the Armenian grandmaster has a total of 9 points (from 14). World Champion Vishy Anand is in second place with 8 points, half a point ahead of Magnus Carlsen, Vladimir Kramnik and Peter Leko.

In the blindfold game between Veselin Topalov and Levon Aronian an ‘oversight’ by the Armenian turned a great position into a problematic one. Just imagine the position after Black’s 20th move with the white queen rook on d1 instead of c1. For that is the position Aronian had ‘in mind’ and his optimism was understandable. However, once Topalov pushed 21.c4 he realized his error and a couple of moves later he switched to defence. First White was a pawn up in a rook endgame and after the rooks had been exchanged and both had promoted one of their pawns a queen endgame materialized with an extra pawn for White. Which proved too small and advantage and after 84 moves and one hour and forty (almost a ‘classical’ FIDE game) the Bulgarian proposed a draw.
The rapid game Aronian summed up in his usual provocative manner: ‘It wasn’t a good game, but I crushed him.’ And this, of course, followed by his high laugh. Then he explained that he believed Topalov could have taken the pawn on g4 and that his own mistake had been 19.Qf4 which would have landed him in trouble if Black had taken on b2 with his queen. However, Topalov also replied with a mistake, 19…g5? and now White was winning. Topalov didn’t get a second chance and after 35 moves the Armenian scored a very important victory.

Глубокий анализ последних событий в Армении еще впереди, но тем не менее мы вправе уже сейчас сделать некоторые выводы. Хотелось бы, прежде всего, остановиться на одном ультимативном заявлении, сделанном бывшим кандидатом в президенты Армении Левоном Тер-Петросяном. Так, на заседании Конституционного суда Армении 5 марта 2008 г., он потребовал организовать ни много ни мало “международное расследование событий первого марта”¹.
